Renaissance-21 Circle- Behind The Times-How newspapers decide what to report
Join us for an exclusive journey into the heart of global journalism with Michael Binyon OBE, a legendary leader writer and veteran foreign correspondent for The Times. In an era of instant information and "fake news," the process of curating the world’s headlines has never been more critical or controversial. In this captivating lecture, Michael Binyon reveals the internal mechanics of one of the world's most influential newspapers.
How do editors distinguish a fleeting trend from a historic shift?
What determines which stories make the front page and which are left on the cutting room floor?
Drawing from decades of experience at the forefront of international reporting, Binyon explores the delicate balance between editorial policy, objectivity, and the pressures of the digital age. This event offers a rare opportunity to understand how the media shapes our perception of reality.

Philosophy Circle - AI as Ideology
Artificial intelligence is no longer just a technology. It has become an ideological system that shapes perception, justifies institutions, and quietly forecloses alternatives. This talk examines how narratives of inevitability, scale, and coherence are hardening into organisational and civic structures, shifting human roles from judgment to supervision, and relocating agency into opaque infrastructures. Rather than asking what AI can do, we will ask what kinds of worlds it is making possible, and which it is making harder to inhabit. Drawing on philosophy, institutional theory, and lived organisational experience, the session explores why AI’s most urgent risks are systemic rather than technical, and why the response must be civic rather than purely technological. We conclude with a reframing of governance, education, and authorship, arguing for reclaiming meaning before code, and plurality before optimisation.
There is no charge for this event; however, please register online to secure a space.

Renaissance-21 Circle-All you ever wanted to know about large language models
All you ever wanted to know about large language models (LLMs) but were too afraid to ask. Join Richard Saldanha in demystifying the world of LLMs. It turns out that while modern-day LLMs easily pass the Turing test, they are anything but sentient. Much hype surrounds these models, yet they only exist in an overwhelmingly binary computing world of zeros and ones – our most reliable form of computing despite the emergence of pseudo-quantum and analogue approaches.
