All you ever wanted to know about large language models (LLMs) but were too afraid to ask. Join Richard Saldanha in demystifying the world of LLMs. It turns out that while modern-day LLMs easily pass the Turing test, they are anything but sentient. Much hype surrounds these models, yet they only exist in an overwhelmingly binary computing world of zeros and ones – our most reliable form of computing despite the emergence of pseudo-quantum and analogue approaches.

The Wednesday Luncheon Circle meets on the first Wednesday of each month, to enjoy a convivial lunch followed by a speaker.

This Month's Guest Speaker - York Membery, a Journalist and travel writer, tells the story of the battle to save the iconic Burgh Island Hotel Art Deco property which inspired the settings for two of Agatha Christie's best-loved novels - and the modern-day knight in shining armour who turned its fortunes around.

Wines for Summer Drinking

Summer is the time to try some lighter, refreshing and chilled wines. The Beer, Wines & Spirits Committee have chosen a selection of eight wines from the Club list: four whites, one rosé and three reds. They can be enjoyed on their own or will match well with the NLC summer menus.

Join the Committee, other members and guests to sample these wines, discuss informally and enjoy conversation about wine in general.

Join the NLC's LGBT+ Circle for an evening reception to celebrate London Pride 2026! We'll be kicking off Pride Weekend with a few drinks to see in the party in the Lounge of the National Liberal Club. Join us as we hear from guest speakers about what Pride means in 2026, as well as a little bit more about the LGBT+ Circle at the NLC. The NLC Literary Circle will be discussing The Golem by Gustav Meyrink. A superbly atmospheric story set in the old Prague ghetto featuring The Golem, a kind of rabbinical Frankenstein's monster, which manifests itself every 33 years in a room without a door. All club members are welcome to join us and to discuss the book, whether you have read it or not.

The event is free to attend, but please register your attendance.

We invite you to join us on Monday 6 July for a fun quiz night with many and varied questions from quiz guru Val Stanfield. Bring along your complete team of six or simply bring yourself and join one on the night.

There will be prizes for the winning team and all some proceeds will go to charity.

This is an evening when you should leave behind your internet appliances and simply rely on your group's combined knowledge. Trust us, it's much more fun that way.

There's a nominal charge of £10 per person to take part and a cash bar all night to keep the brain cells working at full speed.

Members will start their day off at the Newby London boutique in Farringdon at 12.15pm sharp where they will begin with a tea masterclass and tasting.

This is followed by a private museum tour of one of the world larges tea ware collections including the Chitra collection, Fabergé and other exquisite & fascinating items.

Members can purchase items from the exclusive shop with a special 15% discount for that day only before making their own way back to the club for 2:30pm where they can enjoy afternoon tea paired with our selection of Newby teas .

Each summer, the NLC holds its summer speed chess championship.

This is an evening of speed chess - games of 5 minutes per player - all played to see who will take home the magnificent Kennedy Cup.

NLC speed chess is best played with a beer in hand and a general air of nonchalance. Blunders are mandatory. It should be a fun and relaxed (and sometimes slightly chaotic) affair.

After last year's success we're hoping to hold this years' event on the Terrace once more - weather permitting.

Players of all abilities are welcome.

The Orpington Circle is delighted to welcome Steve Darling MP, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Work and Pensions, for an evening of discussion and insight. Elected in 2024 after three decades serving Torbay as a councillor - including four years as Council Leader - Steve brings deep experience of frontline public service and local leadership. Registered blind, Steve offers a powerful and personal perspective on disability, equality and access, alongside first-hand understanding of pressures on the NHS through his family’s experience. His work focuses on improving health services, tackling the cost of living crisis, and standing up for communities facing environmental challenges such as sewage pollution. This event offers a unique opportunity to hear Steve’s insights, ask questions, and take part in an open and thoughtful conversation about the issues shaping communities today.

Rising star vocalist Lizzie Blissett has been making waves on the Norfolk jazz scene for a couple of years with appearances at Norwich Jazz Club interpreting the music of Ella Fitzgerald and George Shearing among others. Born in Norwich, woodwind player Rob Milne studied jazz at Middlesex University and has toured around the UK and Europe. They will be performing Rob’s arrangements some of their favourite standards, accompanied by piano and bass

This launch event is jointly with the London Distillery who will showcase a series of whisky’s from the relaunch of the Distillery. There will be a short introduction to the whisky circle from Professor Johann Malawana and a chance to input into the direction of the circle. There is already an active initial circle group along with informal events outside the club. Through this circle this will be opened up to all interested members.

Club Asia Circle is delighted to announce that after 5 years since Jung Chang's first visit to our club in a sold-out event in July 2021 on her 4th book, Jung Chang is coming back again this year on 20th July to discuss her 5th book and the new book Fly, Wild Swans, and will be interviewed by Rebecca Liu , 2026 Booker Prize Judge and Acting Culture Editor, Saturday Magazine, Guardian News and Media.

Dr Jung Chang CBE was the first person from mainland China in the 1980s to gain a PHD degree from the University of York, and she later moved to London and became a lecturer at SOAS of the University of London.
