Remembering David Lloyd George: A Special Anniversary Dinner

Join us for an extraordinary evening as we mark 80 years since the passing of David Lloyd George, one of Britain’s most influential statesmen. This special anniversary dinner offers members and guests the opportunity to honour a visionary leader whose radical reforms and brilliant leadership helped shape the nation.

As a shrewd Liberal politician, Lloyd George was celebrated for his exceptional oratory, organisational skills, and unwavering determination, guiding Britain through the turmoil of the First World War. However, his legacy is a complex one—while he achieved so much for the British people, his personal flaws have also sparked debate over the years.

The evening will feature our “Remembering David Lloyd George” talk, accompanied by a delicious three-course dinner, and aims to be a thoughtful reappraisal of his life and achievements, exploring how a man of humble beginnings rose to become a towering figure in history.

Lloyd George holds a special place in the history of the NLC. Not only was he a member, but he also lived at the club for a time, becoming a key part of its community. His presence endures in our walls, with his portrait proudly displayed in the Smoking Room and our largest event space named in his honour.

The evening will feature a talk by David Chadwick MP (Liberal Democrat MP for Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe) discussing David Lloyd George’s impact and legacy.

Our second speaker, Richard Rhys O’Brien (Grandson of the Rev. J. T. Rhys, the former private secretary of Margaret Lloyd George at No. 10 and author of two recent books published on Margaret Lloyd George) will explore and reveal the extensive welfare and political campaigning of Margaret Lloyd George, and how she in many ways supported Lloyd George and helped win the war.

David Lloyd George (17 January 1863 – 26 March 1945)

David Lloyd George served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1916 to 1922, gaining renown as a decisive wartime leader during the First World War and as a key figure in shaping the postwar settlement at the Paris Peace Conference. His tenure also marked significant contributions to social reform, including the National Insurance Act of 1911, and his role in negotiating the establishment of the Irish Free State.

Before his premiership, Lloyd George proved instrumental in strengthening Britain’s financial and industrial resilience as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1908–1915). During this period, he introduced the groundbreaking "People’s Budget," which imposed a 20% tax on unearned land value increases, payable upon sale or inheritance. His vision for social justice also led to the National Insurance Act of 1911, a pioneering measure providing sickness and unemployment insurance and laying the foundation for the modern welfare state.

As Minister of Munitions during the war, Lloyd George’s dynamic leadership ensured a steady supply of arms and munitions to the front lines, solidifying his reputation as an indispensable wartime figure. This success propelled him to the premiership in 1916, where his ability to galvanize national efforts proved critical to the Allied victory. His legacy as both a reformer and wartime leader continues to shape perceptions of his place in British history.
