Join us at the National Liberal Club to celebrate St. David’s Day, an occasion deeply cherished in Wales. The day is traditionally marked by vibrant festivities, including traditional dancing, singing, hymns, and poetry recited in both Welsh and English—often featuring Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, the beloved Welsh National Anthem. On this special day, many wear the iconic Welsh national costume: a red and black plaid skirt paired with a red shawl and a tall black hat or bonnet for women, while boys don flat caps and shorts, often bringing daffodils to school in tribute to the Welsh heritage.
At the National Liberal Club, we’ll honor this rich cultural tradition with:
• A 3-course Welsh-themed menu
• Live music by a talented Welsh harpist
• A toast to St David led by Guest of Honour Winston Roddick, CB,KC

Why are daffodils and leeks associated with Wales?
The daffodil is the national flower of Wales and in Welsh it is called Cenhinen Bedr, meaning St Peter’s leek. It also blooms in abundance across Wales in late February and early March. Legends claim that the 7th century King of Gwynedd, Cadwaladr, ordered his men to strap a leek to their armour to help easily distinguish them from the enemy in the heat of battle, a tale that perhaps inspired the Tudor Royal Household (who were of Welsh origin) to instruct their guards to wear leeks on St David's Day. A tradition that is carried on until this day. Please note that this is an NLC Event and qualifies as part of our NLC loyalty card scheme.
